i am what i am

The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

To be clear, the name of the animal while it is still alive is the same name we use for the animal when it is food. It's just that I am generally more likely to encounter one in the grocery store than in its natural habitat.

Not that you would buy just one.

C'mon Bill! How are we supposed to think about this when we're crushed in here so tightly? Back off and give us some room!

Interesting. If I had heard that animal, my first reaction would have been "I missed one" not "I think of it as a food, first."

That was my first reaction. One reason I might have missed it is because I think of it as food first, not because it is a less valid answer. The student got the full bonus points offered.

According to this article, that food is not limited to a specific species, so you may not want to qualify it as an animal.

Once considered an imported delicacy, sardines now have a humble reputation. They aren't one species of fish. Instead, sardines are any of dozens of small, oily, cold-water fish that are part of the herring family that are sold in tightly packed cans.

More than one species is okay. We were drawing a line at types of animals that don't even make up a full species.

It was an arbitrary line to draw anyway.

Especially in light of the sometime seeming arbitrariness of species designations.

In my (subjective, anthropocentric, superficial) opinion, the multiple species of raccoon for instance are much more easily confused than, say, a sharpei and a briard. :)

There's this fictional (though often referenced) creature.

I find this to be amazing and beautiful, I hope at least some of you do, too:

Edit: To save you the click if you don't want to go, this is apparently an automated(?) website that listens to Twitter for iambic pentameter, then repeats them in lines of 4, thus producing random poetry.
