Interesting. If I had heard that animal, my first reaction would have been "I missed one" not "I think of it as a food, first."

I did this activity for years with the same animals, but one year, one of my students came up with one I had not thought of before.

That was my first reaction. One reason I might have missed it is because I think of it as food first, not because it is a less valid answer. The student got the full bonus points offered.

Especially in light of the sometime seeming arbitrariness of species designations.

In my (subjective, anthropocentric, superficial) opinion, the multiple species of raccoon for instance are much more easily confused than, say, a sharpei and a briard.
