Post Sleepy in Seattle
Today's blog post put me in mind of The Holy Tango of Literature, a tome of immeasurable comic genius by one Francis Heaney. As it happens I blogged about Holy Tango just recently:

http://www.emphatic.com/bobg/wordpress/2006/11/25/is-a-sperm-like-a-whale/

...so I will leave it to my blog post to explain its weirdly inspired premise. Meanwhile, I can tell you that Holy Tango includes a Chaucerian ballad entitled, "Carry Huge Coffee," about Seattle's somnolent clime. It begins:

Quote:
In tholde dayes of the towne Seatel,
Of whos charmes Nirvana fans yet pratel,
Al that reyny land fayn slepen late.
Thus ofte a sutor failled to keepe a date;
And werkers reched offices at noon,
Noddyng of although the sunne shoon;
Husbondes were too tyred by the eve
A staf for plesyng wyves to acheve.

...and goes on to describe the arrival of a knight named "Sterrebukke" who saves Seattle from its drowsy languor.

Cheers,
- Bob

That is interesting! I, for one, could never anagram like that, much less write like that.

Sam, his card. Smile

It's now on my Christmas list.

Wow, I used to read these on the late, lamented Modern Humorist, but I had no idea they were by crossword constructor (and fellow Crossworld disser) Francis Heaney.

I agree, these things are genius. Almost every single one is funnier than it needed to be. My sister and I still like to quote the "So feathery...and so dedicated to Allah" pastiche.

Brilliant, brilliant stuff. And my thanks to Bob for posting about this. I'd never heard of this fellow before, but these are the best literary parodies I've ever seen.

Just now read the whole thing and found that it was really funny. I also read all the others and really liked "We Long Bony Dorks" by Gwendolyn Brooks. Although I am not a long, bony dork, the poem describes me really good. Except, of course, I am kind of good at sports. And I don't get beat up.

Like Raj said, I've got to get that book!

Just to resurrect a thread which is perhaps worthy of resurrection, I finally got around to ordering a couple of copies of ~Holy Tango~ after reading most of it online back in December. The book itself is rather nicely made, so it's certainly worth the 10 bucks or so. I highly recommend it -- it's hilarious, especially if you're at all familiar with the works being parodied.

Okay, I'm kinda taking this thread off topic. What is the funniest/best anagram of your name. Doesn't have to be your full name. Can use initials. Just has to be good and or funny.

Mine is ironic. It's "sarcasm hid". Funny, I always thought I used too much sarcasm.

I recognize the web site. Steve Rushin wrote articles in SI (Rushin's Alphabet Soup) about these and referenced the website.

And anagrams, unlike Steve Rushin, Never Sh*t Us. (That came from one of his articles on sports related anagrams.)
