Etymology of "Cartography"

The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

Never heard this before, but it seems REALLY unlikely.

You might want to look at this paper published just last year in e-Perimetron ("International Web Journal on Sciences and Technologies Affined to History of Cartography and Maps"). It contains some really good (and dense) reading and some fascinating information on the etymology of "cartography". My interest was piqued by your initial post considering my profession, coincidentally, is in GIS/cartographic processing, so this whole conversation, and paper, was quite interesting to me:

Hope you enjoy! -- even if it doesn't necessarily support your thesis.
