Question 7 (female title characters)

Postby TheConfessor » Tue Nov 25, 2008 12:01 am

7. What unusual distinction is shared by all these actresses? Julie Andrews, Cate Blanchett, Joan Crawford, Pam Grier, Katharine Hepburn, Diane Keaton, Julia Roberts, and Ginger Rogers. They all played a first-and-last-name title character of a film: Mary Poppins, Veronica Guerin, Mildred Pierce, Jackie Brown, Alice Adams or Sylvia Scarlett, Annie Hall, Mary Reilly or Erin Brockovich, and Kitty Foyle. This is a lot less common for female title characters than it is for males...I had a hard time coming up with eight. Can you suggest others?

Here are some more:
Hannie Caulder / Raquel Welch
Cleopatra Jones / Tamara Dobson
Jane Eyre / Joan Fontaine
Miss Annie Rooney / Shirley Temple
Brenda Starr / Brooke Shields

I'm not sure how you define "title character," but if it's a character whose full name appears in the title, that opens up a lot more possibilities, such as The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, The World Of Suzie Wong, the Lara Croft movies, etc.

I took it to mean that the title character's first and last name are the title of the movie. Any other words in the title would disqualify the move.... so, the Lara Croft movies would be out.

I'd like to see how many male characters we could come up with....

I'll start, one at a time.

Michael Clayton - George Clooney

Interesting... I don't know the name of the actor that played the young Forest Gump, but I suppose he would qualify as well....

Same with Derek Luke in Antwone Fisher (there were younger versions of the title character played by other actors).

And, what if the character has no last name....i.e. the Archangel Michael in "Michael" starring John Travolta.

Michael Conner Humphreys played the young Forrest Gump (IMDB)

And speaking of young actors, I didn't know offhand the name of the kid who played Billy Elliot, but IMDB tells me it was Jamie Bell.

I don't think so. His "promotional literature" (for want of a better term) lists his name as "Betelgeuse", which Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis mispronounce several times (I remember "Bettle-guys" and "Beetlemeyer").

Does Ferris Bueler's Day Off count? If so, Matthew Broderick is in.
What about Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid? I guess that counts for Newman but not Redford.

Then of course, there are song titles:

"Brian Wilson" -- Barenaked Ladies
"Buddy Holly" -- Weezer
"Clint Eastwood" -- Gorillaz

Ray Hamel sent in a long list on the distaff side. Cutting and pasting:

Joan Crawford also played "Harriet Craig," "Daisy Kenton" and "Sadie McKee"!
Here's a few others I've seen:
Tamara Dobson in "Cleopatra Jones"
Dorothy Dandridge in "Carmen Jones"
Jane Fonda in "Cat Ballou"
Barbara Stanwyck in "Stella Dallas" and "Annie Oakley"
Amanda Bynes in "Sydney White"
Greta Garbo in "Anna Karenina"
Mia Farrow in "Angela Mooney"
Joan Fontaine in "Jane Eyre"
Jane Wyman in "Lucy Gallant"
Monica Vitti in "Modesty Blaise"
Emma Roberts in "Nancy Drew"
Mary Pickford in "Stella Maris"

I was going to say Mike Myers, but none of his movies are called Austin Powers.

A couple Adam Sandler films apply, though.

Anna Karenina was also played by Vivien Leigh and Sophie Marceau - and probably dozens of other ladies.
Frances - Jessica Lange (biopic of Frances Farmer)
The Diary of Anne Frank - Millie Perkins and I think Melissa Gilbert?
Anne Frank: The Whole Story - Hannah Taylor Gordon

For the question, it's gotta be first and last name and nothing else.
