The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

Solved. There's a clear starting point...

Spoiler: show
The two Kevin Bacon movies share a common word.

...but I don't see how you do the rest without IMDb.

I always assume people are going to use the Internet. And I use it too, unless someone explicitly says "without looking it up," in which case I still look it up but just don't post the answer. That's why I can't do Tuesday Trivia; it would just be a scavenger hunt for me.

I'll mention that, for the puzzle above, in the movie titles, each variable represents one word, while in the performer names, each variable may represent one or two names. If the two names are first and last, I alphabetized by last name, and if the variable represents two first names, I alphabetized by first first name.

This one should be a bit more solvable, with or without IMDb...

Tommy Lee Jones was in [ N ] in [ C ] with [ Z ] [ U ] who was in [ Y ] [ Y ] [ W ] with Kevin Kline who was in [ O ] [ R ] [ K ] with [ M ] [ U ] who was in [ G ] [ S ] with Michael Gambon who was in Sleepy Hollow with [ D ] [ T ] who was in After.Life with [ L ] [ P ] who was in Unknown with Diane Kruger who was in [ X ] [ S ] with [ J ] [ H ] who was in The [ C ] [ F ] with Scarlett Johansson who was in [ V ] [ D ] [ A ] with [ I ] [ B ] who was in [ Q ] [ E ] for [ R ] [ N ] with Tommy Lee Jones.

Each variable represents one word.

All of these are correct. Nice job for off the top of your head! Here are a few hints for the others:

Spoiler: show
J.H. are the real initials for [ J ] [ H ].

[ M ] [ U ] currently stars in a popular British television series inspired by the film [ G ] [ S ], which was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won Best Original Screenplay.

[ O ] [ R ] [ K ] is in movie theaters right now, though maybe the smaller art theaters more than the big chains.

Kevin Bacon was in [ H ] / [ R ] with [ g ] [ n ] who was in [ j ] [ q ] [ 3 ] [ j ] [ O ] with [ h ] [ c ] who was in [ r ] [ x ] with [ a ] [ y ] who was in The [ F ] with [ 6 ] [ v ] who was in [ N ] with [ e ] [ w ] who was in [ V ] [ Q ] [ 8 ] with [ X ] [ k ] who was in [ V ] [ U ] [ u ] with [ P ] [ d ] who was in [ j ] [ Y ] [ M ] with [ 9 ] [ 1 ] who was in [ C ] [ 2 ] with [ b ] [ 1 ] who was in [ J ] [ 7 ] [ J ] with [ 2 ] [ u ] who was in [ Z ] [ Z ] with [ s ] [ I ] who was in [ x ] [ z ] [ 0 ] [ W ] with [ A ] [ T ] who was in Meet Joe Black with [ 5 ] [ l ] who was in [ R ] with [ E ] [ o ] who was in [ x ] [ 4 ] [ p ] with [ L ] [ G ] who was in [ S ] [ i ] [ t ] with [ m ] [ G ] who was in The [ B ] with [ D ] [ K ] [ N ] who was in [ 0 ] [ f ] [ j ] [ p ] with Kevin Bacon.

It looks complicated, but the more you solve, the easier it gets.

Clarification notes (not spoilers) below:

Spoiler: show
Each variable represents one word, though in one case two initials (used as a first name) are represented by one variable.

The O in [ j ] [ q ] [ 3 ] [ j ] [ O ] is the upper-case letter O.

The 1 in [ 9 ] [ 1 ] and [ b ] [ 1 ] is the numeral 1.

The I in [ s ] [ I ] is the upper-case letter I.

The 0 in [ x ] [ z ] [ 0 ] [ W ] and [ 0 ] [ f ] [ j ] [ p ] is the numeral 0.

The l in [ 5 ] [ l ] is the lower-case letter l.

Happy solving!

And here's another clue for you all:
[ s ] [ I ] is Paul

Using the same variables as above...

1. [ 2 ] [ t ] was [ 0 ] companion to the Doctor before [ x ].

2. [ f ] murder trials have attracted as much attention as the one for [ b ] [ 5 ].

3. Instead of adopting a [ 7 ], Mr. Drummond took in [ 6 ] and [ y ].

4. [ h ] [ B ] once created a documentary about [ 6 ] [ v ].

5. The TV episode [ Q ] [ H ] dealt with the religious beliefs of two presidential candiates, first names [ 6 ] and [ P ].

6. The star of the film [ e ] dated several famous people, [ E ], celebrities like [ 9 ] [ 1 ] and [ A ] [ T ].

7. [ a ] [ y ] has a small but memorable cameo in [ r ] [ x ], while [ h ] [ c ], [ A ] [ T ], [ P ] [ d ], and even [ b ] [ 1 ] have much larger roles.

8. [ R ] spent many [ z ] [ C ] and even [ M ] the leader of [ D ] with no [ O ].

9. The historical figure [ h ] [ o ] is a character in the film [ V ] [ U ] [ u ].

10. [ e ] [ H ] is one of the X-[ p ].

I needed the variable order and the Paul hint. In retrospect, maybe I didn't, but the prospect of 62 variables zapped my will to solve.

Bill, can I adapt one of these into a Sporcle quiz? I think it could be a lot of fun if it were interactive, and with 62 color blocks instead on letters and numbers.

I would of course give you credit with a link to your website, or if you prefer set up a separate account under your name.

It could end up looking something like this quiz, but I think it would work better in a map format.

Rockgolf, I love the idea. Credit with a link to my website would be great. I'll trust you to find the right format.

I'm wondering how it affects the puzzle if you can't look stuff up or know the alphabetical order of the answers. The advantage, of course, is that answers are filled in automatically so you can immediately see the new information affects the rest of the puzzle. Neel and Marpocky might be able to weigh in on this, as well as others who may have attempted to solve these.

But maybe I need to put together a more Sporcle-friendly version. What do you all think?

Okay, I've put together a version optimized for Sporcle. I made it a little longer with more variables. I tried to choose movies that many people would know off the top of their heads. And to compensate for lost alphabetical hints, I added the year of each movie.

Here it is if you want to field test it. Or you could just wait and do it on Sporcle. Rockgolf, I'll PM you the solution.

Will Smith was in Six Degrees of Separation (1993) with [01][02] who was in [03][04] (2003) with [05][06] who was in [07][08][09][10] (2006) with [11][12] who was in [08][13] (2008) with [14][15] who was in [08][16][17] (2008) with [18][19] who was in [20][21] (2013) with [22][23] who was in [08][24]-[25] (2010) with [26][27] who was in [08][28][29][30] (2002) with [11][31] who was in [32] (2008) with Kevin Spacey who was in [20][33] (1999) with [34][23] who was in [08][35] (2010) with [36][37] who was in [38][36] (2004) with [11][39] who was in [40][41][42][24][44][45][46][47] (2003) with Matthew McConaughey who was in [48] (2014) with [26][49] who was in [50][51] (2014) with [52][53] who was in [54][55] (2002) with [56][57] who was in [08][58][59] (1993) with [60][61] who was in [62][63] (1987) with [64][61] who was in [65][66] (1979) with [67][68] who was in [08][69] (2014) with [67][70][71] who was in [72][73][58] (2013) with [44][74] who was in [28][29][75] (2000) with Samuel L.
