Groups of one?

Postby tOdd » Thu Aug 30, 2012 10:22 am

Please pardon my ignorance, I only found out a few days ago that Edward Bear, who I know from the hit single Last Song, is actually a group and not one guy named Edward.

I was aware that Jethro Tull was a group, but now I'm wondering what other recording acts I've mistaken for people because of their name. Any of you geniuses care to enlighten me?

Two with which I made a similar mistake are James and OutKast.

Other possibilities might include Blondie, Travis, and Uriah Heep.

Alice Cooper? There may be others, but these are the two unique exceptions. They refer to the band AND the soloist. Sade the band was named for the soloist. Alice Cooper the soloist was named for the band.

Pink Floyd too obvious?

BTW, as I recall, I think Edward Bear named themselves after Winnie the Pooh.

Danny Wilson
Max Webster
Cinderella

BTW, Larry Evoy, the lead singer, composer and songwriter of Edward Bear, recorded solo material and released it under the name of Edward Bear. (He's a minor hometown hero in Toronto.)

Hmmm, more than I thought

Postby tOdd » Fri Aug 31, 2012 11:09 am

Thanks, everyone, for all those bands...most of which I did know weren't solo acts.

But seriously, would anyone think Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds is one person?? Especially if they (like me) saw this MST3K sketch:

Most people would think they're a quartet, but in fact they are a trio.

Tangent.
Veering slightly away from the specific topic.
Tangent.
A list of trios who chose names which strongly suggest they are something other than trios.
Tangent.
Seriously, people who choose to read some of the words are liable to think anything.

There are three names listed ("Hamilton," "Joe Frank," and "Reynolds") so wouldn't people assume trio?
I guess it comes down to the question of did they forget the comma between Joe and Frank, or is Joe Frank one person? For why have a comma after Hamilton if not after Joe?
I guess it could be a duo, with the first name properly rostered (surname first followed by a comma then given names).

Actually, what's more unusual about that band's name is that many people who heard their biggest hit, "Fallin' in Love," may have assumed that the band consisted of three people, one named Hamilton, one named Joe Frank, and the other named Reynolds. In fact, at the time, the band consisted of Dan Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo, and Alan Dennison, with no Reynolds involved. Tommy Reynolds had been a member at the time of the band's previous big hit, "Don't Pull Your Love," but after he left and was replaced by Alan Dennison, the band didn't change its name. (They did change it to "Hamilton, Joe Frank & Dennison" later.)

Cocteau Twins aren't twins; rather, they are a group named after a song by Johnny & The Self-Abusers, who didn't have a Johnny, but did have a John who went by Johnnie.
