Most commercial globes are conventionally mounted through the axis. It sort of defeats the purpose being able to look at the poles as opposed to a Mercator map.

National Geographic made a big deal when they produced a mountless globe that just had a plastic cradle. That cradle served as a great circle route to trace out air routes or measure distances.

The closest you can get now are huggable globes or beach ball globes.
