John Gadsby Chapman made a mistake in his famous painting, The Baptism of Pocahontas, which hangs in the rotunda. What was the mistake?
One of the Indians has six toes.


It seems presumptuous to say that the painter made a mistake. Lots of people are born with extra digits. In modern times, when it happens, the surplus fingers and toes are usually lopped off before the infant leaves the hospital. That probably wasn't the case back in Pocahontas' time.
