The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

Wordplay Wednesday (January 6, 2016)

Postby Neel Mehta » Sun Jan 10, 2016 12:09 pm

From Ken's blog post:

Wordplay Wednesday! Take an adjective for something that’s very hard to kill. Reverse all its letters except the first one (as you would to turn TSETSE into TESTES) and you’ll get the name of a fictional adversary that was notoriously hard to kill. What are the two words?

Unhelpful hint: I have no idea.

Well, thanks for starting the thread at least.

Maybe if we put our heads together we can figure it out.

I'm not ready to give up yet. Wordplay Wednesday always seems like a herculean task at first, but then you connect the dots and it all makes sense.

Nice one. The hints helped.

I'll give some hints of my own. First, in a spoiler, the length of the word:

Spoiler: show
The word is five letters long.

Next, my attempt to give further hints through wordplay.

Spoiler: show
I labored hard to get this one. Sometimes you cut one possibility off your list, and two more take its place. It's frustrating when the problem-solving process keeps draggin' on.

I kept focusing on the fictional adversary, when I should have tried to find the adjective. So I sat in my Eames chair, cranked up my headphones to the Max, and worked it out. Good thing, too; for a while there it was becoming the Bane of my existence, and I was going Kray-Kray.

Focusing on the adjective sounds like a good strategy, but you need to have the tenacity of a certain pair of fictional boy detectives before you can rest on your laurels.

If you focus on the adversary, however, it might be a nasty sea serpent of a problem, akin to one of those riddles from Greek Mythology.

We're getting closer; I can feel it...

Well said. This made me think of the Cassidy acting family. David's half-brother Shaun is probably best known for playing a Hardy on TV, and David's daughter Katie is probably best known for playing a Laurel on TV. Photograph the three together, and David could caption it "Me, with Laurel and Hardy".

Aha, I've got it!

Based on Neel's Marvel hints and Rockgolf, um, actually saying the word in his last post, I finally figured it out.

Spoiler: show
Hale/Hela

See, it's true. Many heads really are better than one!
