Wordplay Wednesday (August 19, 2015)

The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

Wordplay Wednesday (August 19, 2015)

Postby Neel Mehta » Thu Aug 20, 2015 10:08 am

Ken posted this one yesterday (link).

Tough one. What do these words have in common?
CASH
IKE
LOLA
LUCINDA
NARCISSUS
SODA

It took me a while to put it together, and I only got there because (1) this is the kind of puzzle I might have tried to think up, and (2) I am familiar with children's television.

I don't have any more good examples, but I came up with some not-so-good ones:

Spoiler: show
OMEGA
CASINO
IGOR (?)
COUNTRY CLUB (??)

Spoiler: show
CASINO
and
Spoiler: show
OMEGA
were also on my shortlist. Also
Spoiler: show
MAMA
.

Better giveaways might be phrases like
Spoiler: show
THE BUNNYMEN
or
Spoiler: show
THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
.

Just to have an explicit answer here: these are words that
Spoiler: show
can be paired with words in the NATO phonetic radio alphabet. (Specifically: TANGO and Cash, MIKE and Ike, CHARLIE and Lola, OSCAR and Lucinda, ECHO and Narcissus, WHISKY and Soda.)

Ken, I just noticed my name check on the blog. Not only did Neel get here before I did, but I needed his "children's television" clue to find the solution.

Perhaps your eye skimmed past the post that quoted your original puzzle, and saw mine as the first response to it.
