The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

Team nicknames that are anagrams

Postby skullturfq » Sun Aug 09, 2015 9:41 am

Some pro sports teams are occasionally referred to by a shortened version of their names.

For instance, the San Francisco 49ers might be the "Niners", or the New York Yankees might be called the "Yanks".

Sometimes, there's a different kind of nickname, where rather than just making a word shorter, we use synonyms or wordplay or something.

For instance, the Tampa Bay Lightning might be the "Bolts", or the Miami Dolphins might be the "Fish", or the Montreal Canadiens might be the "Habs".

If we allow the usage of this second type of nickname for one of the teams, can you think of two pro sports teams that often play against each other that are sometimes described using words that are anagrams of each other? (Like if the Toronto Raptors played against a team nicknamed the "Parrots".)

Spoiler: show
Rick Reuschel was a teammate of Bobby Bonds in the latter’s final big league season, and of Barry Bonds in the latter’s first big league season, wearing the uniforms of two teams that fit your criteria.
