The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

Novelist has same initials as film director

Postby skullturfq » Sat Aug 01, 2015 2:04 pm

I'm thinking of a certain novel. Three years after the novel was published, a movie based on the novel was released. The novel and the movie have the same title.

The writer of the novel has the same initials as the director of the movie. (I'm ignoring middle names. So it's like "Joseph Conrad" and "James Cameron", but it's not them.)

Is that enough information for you to guess both the novelist and the director? (They are both very well-known award-winning members of their respective fields.)

I can confirm that the director and the novelist (as well as the lead actor) are widely considered to be at the very top of their respective fields, even if the movie itself is easy to overlook.

Nope. I needed Bill's reply to get it.

I'll give another small hint in case it helps anyone, and can later give bigger hints as well.

Small hint based on lifespans:

Spoiler: show
The novelist is still alive, and the film director is dead.

One possible way to go with the bigger hints is geography.

Geography-based hint:

Spoiler: show
The novelist is from an eastern state in the US, and he set his first two published novels there, but his third published novel -- the one relevant to this thread -- was set in the western US.

And to make that geography-based hint even more blatant:

The novelist is from
Spoiler: show
the easternmost of the 48 contiguous U.S. states.

Thought it would be considered more of a mid-west location of the film.
(WARNING: An answer directly listed in spoiler below.)

Spoiler: show
Stephen King / Stanley Kubrick - The Shining

PS: Bill, that was a wonderfully subtle clue. Didn't even pick it up until after I solved it.

It must have been. I like the more subtle clues that only seem obvious after you know the answer, and this was a shining example.

I loved those clues. Loved both the book and the movie, too, but the book was infinitely better for one specific reason that had to do with Scatman Crothers.
