Oscar! Oscar! How'd he win?

Many movies have title characters - e.g. Forrest Gump, Lincoln, Ben-Hur - and a significant proportion of Best Actor Oscars have gone to men portraying those title characters. Of the movies with male title characters, though, only one led to a Best Actor Oscar for a man portraying someone other than the title character. What was that movie?

The question's phrasing is slightly off. Others have won leading actor Oscars for "portraying someone other than the title character" if the title character is female. Lee Marvin, definitely. Rex Harrison, probably. Not sure about Richard Dreyfuss or William Hurt.
