The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

TCONA Lineup

Postby gameshowcongress » Wed Jun 04, 2014 9:14 am

From http://www.tcona.com/tcona4-lineup-announced/

We can finally announce a nearly-complete lineup of activities scheduled for the 4th Annual Trivia Championships of North America, set for this August 8-10 at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. If you haven’t signed up yet, you might want to hurry — the $129 Early Bird offer ends this Friday at Midnight. Sign up here.

Here’s a bit of what you can expect at TCONA4 this year. (This list is incomplete, but it’s a start. We’ll add links to individual pages as we post them, so if you’re going to share a link, this is a good post for that):

•Geek Bowl Vegas: Geeks Who Drink is the nation’s largest trivia company, and this year, they’re bringing Geek Bowl to TCONA! If you’ve never been to their annual Geek Bowl event in Austin, you’re missing out on a real party. Here, though, they’ll be bringing the caravan to Vegas and holding a summer version of their flagship event. We will have prizes on top of the medals we’ll be giving away to the winning teams, but you won’t want to miss this.

•Quiz Bowl: The granddaddy of all quiz games, this team vs. team format has been played at colleges around the country (and around the world) since the early 1960s. TCONA is home to the national Open Quiz Bowl Championship, and the winners can rightfully claim the title of the Best Quiz Team In America. All attendees will have the opportunity to play over the course of the weekend. This is, of course, a medal event.

•LearnedLeague Open, & the LearnedLeague Invitational: The greatest quiz league on the internet since 1997, this year LearnedLeague becomes the official solo trivia championship of North America. A fast-paced, head-to-head trivia challenge, players play matches of six questions against each other. Defense is as important as knowledge in this all-comers quiz event, and the visual element appeals to viewers as well. Two editions of LearnedLeagueLive will happen at TCONA4: an open tournament, for everyone to play, and the invitational championship, where the winners of the online edition will play (along with the Open champions) for the crown of Best Trivia player in North America. This is a medal event.

•The First Quiz Of TCONA: The official start to festivities on the Friday morning, this will be the first event where all the players will be in the room at the same time. A general-interest event, this quiz will be played by individuals in the Main Stage area, and will last an hour. This is a medal event.

•5×5: An individual competition, running all weekend long, 5×5 is a well-run fast-paced game show style buzzer game. This tournament will culminate in a championship match on the final day. This is a medal event.

•Smartypants: One of the longest-running events in North American Quizzing, this is Paul Paquet’s buzzer-driven hybrid of harder-core games like Quiz Bowl, crossed with and lighter game-show-caliber fare. The questions are often offbeat and extremely funny. For many, this event is the highlight of the weekend.

•Game Show Play-A-Long: A game show simulator developed by Home Game Enterprizes, the Play-A-Long will occupy its own room for all of Friday and Saturday, providing big-scale playable game versions of classic shows and modern hits. It has served as a welcome shot of nostalgia for players who needed a break between the more intense competitions, and this year they’re expanding to include more (and improved) versions of many favorites. People really, really love this.

•Knodgeball: Legendary Jeopardy! champion and philanthropist Bob Harris created this game a few years ago, and it’s taken off. A mix between speed trivia and dodgeball, this full-contact sport is the most demanding of all the events at TCONA. Teams of two players play against each other in 90-second matches where they try to answer questions while trying to evade foam balls. It’s a truly unique event, and it has spread from its Southern California roots and with leagues now set up in New York, Washington DC, Atlanta and into Canada. A special arena space will be laid out for this event, which will be held over the course of an afternoon. This is a medal event.

•Pub Quiz Lounge: For most people, trivia means playing as teams in bars. An integral part of TCONA since the very first installment, the Pub Quiz Lounge has provided a venue for trivia hosts from around the country to show the very best players how bar trivia is done in their part of the world. This tends to be the social core of TCONA, where strangers can play together and get to know each other over a few rounds of trivia and a few cocktails. This will also have a dedicated room, where showcases will continue throughout the conference.

•Trivia Hall Of Fame: This year’s inductee, Fred L. Worth, the occasionally controversial compiler of the very first modern Trivia Encyclopedia, is a legend in quiz circles, and he is scheduled to give a speech acknowledging his induction into an ever-growing pantheon of great quiz minds and operators. His official induction will be part of a larger ceremony in the main space, where next year’s nominees will be presented, and voting will go on over the course of the weekend.

•Live Talks: Our live speaker series, first presented last year, had the producers & on-air talent of The Chase (USA: GSN, UK: ITV) come and tell stories of the show’s original creation, how it became a smash hit in England, and the ups and downs of bringing an idiosyncratic game show to US audiences. This year, we have producers and directors slated to speak, as well as the President of Quizzing Nigeria, giving informative talks about parts of the trivia universe that most of us don’t ever get to see. (And yes, we will have Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter and Roger Craig up to speak about their time in the Jeopardy! Tournament of Decades Championship.) While people come to TCONA to play, it’s the stories told at these talks that are likely to stay with you long after they’ve gone home.

One update to the text:

TCONA Talks: Following up on our exciting first year, when we had the producers & on-air talent of The Chase (USA: GSN, UK: ITV) recount the ups and downs of show’s smash-hit creation in the UK, adaptation to a US audience, and eventual success, this year, we'll have several American TV producers and directors, plus the President of Quizzing Nigeria, all discussing parts of the trivia universe that most of us rarely see. (And yes, we will have Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, and many other recent tournament players up to speak about their time in the million-dollar Jeopardy! Decades Tournament.) In addition to TCONA's unique opportunities to play and socialize, TCONA Talks offer looks behind the scenes that you'll find nowhere else.
