The World's Longest Sudoku Puzzle

Postby cadams35 » Fri Dec 29, 2006 1:34 pm

I was a B&N recently and ended up buying something called "The World's Longest Sudoku Puzzle". It consists of 167 interlocking sudokus, with 8,929 empty squares waiting to be filled. It is 21' 9 3/4" long and gets harder as you move left to right.

I am going to try to solve it as fast as I can. How much time do you think it will take, to the nearest minute?

Well...although I kick @$$ at math, unfortunately sudokus involve logic, not math ability. However, I do fairly well at sudokus. If all sudokus are rated on the following scale:

Easy
Average
Medium
Hard
Genius
Impossible

then I would have to say four to five minutes on sudokus in the first category, five to eight minutes on the second, seven to ten minutes on the third, nine to fifteen on the fourth, fifteen to twenty five on the fifth, and twenty minutes to two hours on impossibles.

The only problem with this is that I have no clue exactly how hard the sudokus are. By themselves, the last few would probably be ranked impossible, but because they are interlinked, they might only be genius rank.

Also, the times listed are averages. My best times are, in order:

3:49
4:21
5:59
7:23
10:52
11:33

BTW, I have no clue as to how much time I will have each day, so I will only count time spent working on the sudoku.

I'm going with 86,400 minutes (2 months).

I started working on it the 30th and, as of now, have finished about 20 to 25 of the sudokus, which means I'm about 12.5 to 14.2 percent done. Of course, they get harder as you get farther into it.

That only tells us how many days you have been working on the puzzle. And you stated yourself that you cant possibly devote every moment of the day to solving it. So, since 12/30/06, how many hours:minutes have you devoted to it?

I went back and figured it out: I've used 6 hours and 37 minutes, but the figure would be lower if I didn't make so many friggin' amateur mistakes!
