Numbered sequels

The place to talk. "On topic"? "Off topic"? We make no such petty distinctions here.

Numbered sequels

Postby themanwho » Fri Feb 07, 2014 9:06 am

The upcoming movie 22 Jump Street is a sequel to the earlier movie 21 Jump Street.

The George Clooney remake Ocean's Eleven had two sequels, Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen.

Are there other films where the sequel is indicated by increasing a number in the film's title, rather than a number that has just been added for reference?

There was a sequel to the 2001 romantic comedy Two Can Play That Game called...
Most unnecessary use of spoiler text ever. Shockingly, the adult industry never made a prequel.

It has to be numbers? So Grumpier Old Men doesn't count. Wasn't there a 102 Dalmations?

102 Dalmatians is perfect. I'd prefer numbers, but Grumpier Old Men is an interesting case. I'm not against expanding this to "unusually named sequels."

The Whole 10 Yards

How about Naked Gun 2 1/2 and Naked Gun 33 1/3?

Hmm.

"A few more" would definitely constitute an increase. But while a fistful is a quantity, it's not a number.

How about titles that don't really apply to the sequel?

Or "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer"

It wasn't last summer anymore. By that point, more than a year had passed. It should have been something like "I Know What You Did A Couple Of Summers Ago".

Would you count "2010", the sequel to "2001"?

You'd have to include "The Whole Ten Yards".

Ha!

A weird non-whole-number example: this is a semi-followup (well, homage, anyway) to 8 1/2.
