Sort the famous people by age

Postby skullturfq » Mon Jan 01, 2018 10:55 am

Happy new year, everyone! 2018 ends in an 8.

Here's a list of famous people who were born in years ending in 8 or 3 (so the age they'll be turning this year is a multiple of 5.)

There is one person for each birth year. The birth years are

1918, 1923, 1928, 1933, 1938, 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993.

The famous people are

Tim Allen
Kofi Annan
Kobe Bryant
Michael Caine
Billy Crystal
Robert De Niro
Billy Graham
Ariana Grande
Neil Patrick Harris
Michael Jordan
Henry Kissinger
Madonna
Walter Mondale
Rihanna
Will Smith
Carrie Underwood

Can you match the people to their birth years?

The great things about this puzzle format:

1) I feel like it gets more challenging every time. For once I think I'm all set with the young and middle-age people, and then the old people present a problem.

2) You can do it forever. Honestly, you could use some of these names again in 2023. If you're not putting this on Sporcle, you should. (Though you'd have to rephrase it so that it doesn't lose its novelty next year.)

I'll give it a go since no one else has.

Spoiler: show
1918: Henry Kissinger
1923: Billy Graham
1928: Walter Mondale
1933: Michael Caine
1938: Kofi Annan
1943: Robert De Niro
1948: Billy Crystal
1953: Tim Allen
1958: Madonna
1963: Michael Jordan
1968: Will Smith
1973: Neil Patrick Harris
1978: Kobe Bryant
1983: Carrie Underwood
1988: Rihanna
1993: Ariana Grande

Three bits of comedy in the darkest recesses of my brain helped me, right or wrong:

Spoiler: show
I don't remember the year Madonna did the Super Bowl halftime show, but I do remember some snarky response that her performance of the LMFAO song should have been called "I'm Sixty and I Know It". At the time, she wasn't 60 yet.

In one of the 1984 Presidential debates, Ronald Reagan turned the tables on concerns of his advanced age by jokingly referring to Walter Mondale's youth and inexperience. I don't know how old Mondale was then, but Reagan was in his 70s.

On How I Met Your Mother, Neil Patrick Harris' character presents a theory about how Ewoks in Return of the Jedi were likeable depending on whether you were above or below the age of 10 when the movie came out. From Doogie Howser, M.D. I know that Harris is close to my age, and we were both near that age borderline.

Glad you liked it.

Your answer is almost perfect, but you need to switch two adjacent people.

Love this puzzle every year, and always have my friends and family do it.

I'm generally not very good at it. Here's what I came up with. Only have 2 switched from Neel, so I guess there's a (small) chance I got it. p.s. I've never heard of Kofi Annan.

Spoiler: show
1918 Henry Kissinger
1923 Billy Graham
1928 Walter Mondale
1933 Kofi Annan
1938 Michael Caine
1943 Robert De Niro
1948 Billy Crystal
1953 Tim Allen
1958 Madonna
1963 Michael Jordan
1968 Will Smith
1973 Neil Patrick Harris
1978 Kobe Bryant
1983 Carrie Underwood
1988 Rihanna
1993 Ariana Grande

Now to go look up the answer in Wikipedia. Edit: Nope, I had two pairs switched...4 wrong. And now that I read who Kofi Annan is, I guess it rings a bell. Originally figured it was a hip-hop singer until I filled in all the younger names with other people.
